Film making and software development

After reading Creativity, Inc., it became very clear how very similar the two different disciplines are.

For me, software development is both art and technology and the same goes for film making. In either case, you have an idea of the final outcome, but you don't have all the details when you start the project.

If you want to make new things, you need creativity in your organisation. To manage talent, you need to give them responsibility and trust. You can't micromanage them and expect a blockbuster movie or a new piece of software.

The book Creativity, Inc. gives some insight to Ed Catmulls management philosophy and the success of Pixar is a good yardstick.
